Humanitarian efforts for civilians of Mutur East
The LTTE, engaged in defensive measures in Mutur East to safeguard the civilian population from the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) offensive that began in the Mavilaru region on Monday, 31 July, is currently taking humanitarian measures to assure that civilians displaced by the SLA aerial bombing and shelling receive necessary aid and medical attention.
Due to the indiscriminate attacks by the SLA that damaged places designated as civilian refuges, and one hospital in Mutur East, the LTTE is undertaking measures with international humanitarian agencies including ICRC for the safe passage of civilians to safer areas where they will be provided with adequate medical facilities and aid. The SLA’s indiscriminate artillery shelling that has continued since 31 July has put civilians in great danger. Three schools were hit by SLA shelling, killing 22 Muslim civilians and injuring several more in the Al Nuriah Muslim School in Thoppur and Arabic College in Mutur town. On Wednesday, 2 August, SLA shelling also hit St. Anthony’s church in Mutur, killing an 8-year-old boy and injuring several others. One ambulance transporting two injured civilians from St. Anthony’s church was hit by SLA artillery fire and killed all three civilians inside the ambulance.
